Move-out / Checkout
This page will be updated and you will receive emails from Campus Housing with next steps as we get closer to move-out/checkout. Feel free to use past semesters' information as a general reference but know that move-out/checkout procedures could change. You can always find important College of Charleston dates, including move-in and move-out dates, on the Academic Calendar.
Move-Out/Checkout Information for Fall 2022
As we prepare for the end of the semester, Campus Housing and Residence Life wanted to provide you with next steps for the end of the semester and Winter Break.
Students will receive an email from Campus Housing with detailed checkout instructions, including how to make an appointment, apply for an exemption, and what to do if you’re not returning to on-campus housing in the spring. If you have questions, please email housing@cofc.edu.
All halls and houses close December 13, 2022, at noon. Students who require on-campus housing at any point between December 13 and January 8 must apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be limited, and granted to students who are homeless, international or have other extenuating circumstances that require them to live on campus during Winter Break. A daily charge will apply for each day outside the regular occupancy period.
All students – regardless of when you leave campus housing for the fall semester – will need to schedule a checkout appointment via the MyHousing/Dining portal. Appointments are available December 5 – December 13. (Halls and houses close December 13 at noon.) Please schedule your appointment starting November 15 and no later than December 1. If you plan to check out before December 5, please email Campus Housing at housing@cofc.edu with your requested date.
Fall Checkout
To make your fall checkout appointment (available November 15):
- Log into MyCharleston and click on the MyHousing/Dining portal. In the portal, click on the Book Appointment button.
- Select the date you plan to leave campus for the semester.
- Checkout appointments will be good for the entire day (7 a.m. to 11 p.m.); you will not need to select a specific time. Note that you must check out by noon if you leave on December 13.
On the day you check out you will need to finalize your checkout virtually. You’ll log into MyCharleston and click on the MyHousing/Dining portal. In the portal, click the Checkout button then follow the directions to check out for the semester.
Residence Life and Campus Housing will inspect rooms after checkout to make sure they are clean and free of trash. Please ensure you do the following.
- Leave your room and common areas clean and free of any trash.
- Remove all perishable food from your refrigerator and suite.
- Set your thermostat (if applicable) to 72 degrees, and unplug any unused electrical items (lamps, printers, etc.).
- Shut and lock all windows, turn off lights, and lock all doors (bedroom, suite and front door, if you’re in a historic house).
- If you currently have an empty space in your room, make sure it is clear of any of your personal items.
Move-Out/Checkout Information for Spring 2022
Another semester is wrapping up! We know you’re planning your next steps and that moving out of campus housing is just one of them. Below you'll find important information from Campus Housing and Residence Life on the steps you’ll need to move out properly. Please check your CofC email for this information and then follow-up communications as we get closer to the end of the semester. If you have any questions, email housing@cofc.edu.
All students must schedule a move-out appointment via the MyHousing/Dining portal. Failure to make an appointment and check out with an RA will result in a $200 improper checkout fine added to you eBill.
Summary of move-out steps:
- Schedule your move-out appointment
- Make a plan with your roommate / suitemates about who is responsible for what
- Pack and prepare your room / suite
- Move out and return your key.
- Check out with RA
1. Schedule move-out appointment
All students need to schedule a move-out appointment via the MyHousing/Dining portal. The portal is now open and checkout appointments will be available April 26 – May 3, 2022. (All halls and houses close May 3, 2022, at noon. Read below if you are a graduating senior.) Please schedule your appointment as soon as possible and no later than April 22. If you plan to move out before April 26, email Campus Housing at housing@cofc.edu with your requested date. Students are required to move out 24 hours after their last final or by May 3 at noon, whichever is earlier.
To schedule your appointment:
- Log into MyCharleston and click on the MyHousing/Dining portal. In the portal, click on the Requests tab in the blue banner and select Appointments.
- Select the date and time you plan to move out.
- Move-out appointments will be for one hour and are for when you will be leaving the building. During the move-out appointment an RA will check your space before you leave. You may take as much time as you need to physically move your items leading up to your appointment time, but not after.
If you are a graduating senior and would like to remain on campus until May 8, 2022, please fill out the graduation extension request form in the MyHousing/Dining Portal. In the portal, click on the Requests tab in the blue banner and select Graduation Extension. (Only students who have applied to graduate will be able to see this form.) Campus Housing will verify that you are eligible to graduate and then send you a confirmation. Depending on where you currently live, we may have to relocate you to a new room on May 3. Graduating seniors who plan to move out by May 3 at noon should follow the directions above to make a move-out appointment.
2. Make a plan
You are responsible for the condition of your bedroom as well as any shared spaces (bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, etc.) upon moving out, regardless of whether you used the space. Residence Life staff members will tape the Damage and Cleaning Responsibility form to your suite door by April 20, 2022. We encourage you to talk to your roommate / suitemates about who is responsible for cleaning and preparing the room / suite, considering when each person is leaving, and assigning tasks accordingly. For example, if you are the first person to leave, you shouldn’t sign up to clean the bathroom since it will still be in use after you leave. You will need to drop off the completed form at your front desk 24 hours before your move-out date.
Failure to complete and return this form will result in charges being applied to all residents in the suite/apartment.
3. Pack and prepare your room / suite
As you pack, don’t forget shared items used by your roommate / suitemates. Take a minute to decide who is going to take these items home or consider donating unwanted items.- Residence Life, Campus Housing and the Center for Sustainable Development partner each year to collect unwanted items and divert them from the landfill. Mindful Move Out 2022 will begin Friday, April 15, in all residence halls across campus. As you begin packing up to move out, think about what items you can donate instead of throwing away. Large bins will be placed in each hall for donatable materials, including housewares (dishware, lamps, rugs, pillows and more); clothing (shoes, pants, jackets, tops, jewelry, handbags and more); non-perishable food items (unopened, shelf-stable food items). This year, you can also donate your foam mattress and bedding for recycling! We are partnering with Goodwill, Closet Case Thrift Store, Charleston Mattress, Green Zone, Teacher’s Supply Closet, Cougar Free Store and the Lowcountry Food Bank to donate any unbroken, non-perishable items. Please discard any broken or damaged items. You can find out more at the Center for Sustainable Development’s Zero Waste page. We also have TerraCycle bins located on the porch of 207 Calhoun for items like empty toothpaste containers, deodorant containers and makeup containers. Check out all the materials we accept via the TerraCycle tab, and drop off at any time.
- Residents should leave their rooms / suites clean and free of trash. Floors should be swept or vacuumed, and all surfaces wiped down. All posters, flags, stickers or other decorative items should be removed from walls. If you have used command strips or other adhesives you must remove these from your walls. Check out this video on how to remove Command Strips properly.
- All personal items must be removed. Anything left will be considered abandoned and will be discarded, and residents will be fined.
- Trash should be removed from the room / suite and placed in designated trash collection areas or dumpsters.
4. Move out and return key.
- Unlike move-in, the College does not close streets; you and anyone helping you move out needs to use designated parking spaces or lots. A limited number of surface lots, during limited dates and times, as well as two-hour garage parking vouchers will be available. Please (along with anyone helping you move out) carefully review detailed parking-accommodation information for spring 2022 move-out on the parking website.
- You may have up to three people help you move out, if needed, and they must follow all of the College’s health and safety protocols and not come to campus if they are not feeling well.
- Move-out helpers will be treated like any other visitors to the building and need to be signed in at the desk.
- Once you have removed all items and trash from your room / suite you will need to return your key to the grey metal key return box in the lobby of your building (or adjacent building). If you have lost your key, please order a new one as soon as possible through the MyHousing/Dining portal.
- Failure to return your key upon move-out will result in a $100 charge applied to your eBill.
5. Check out
Once you have removed all items from your room and have cleaned, you will need to meet an RA at the front desk. They will do a final check of your space to ensure you have removed all items and left your space clean. They will then scan the QR code from the checkout section of your MyHousing/Dining portal to check you out. Failure to make an appointment and check out with an RA will result in a $200 improper checkout fine added to you eBill.
